Just a quick jot down of some thoughts I was just discussing with a co-worker:

1. don’t create a website or furnish an office (or even worry about a name, logo, letterhead etc.) until you know what you want to sell.

2. don’t choose something to sell unless you know what your target market wants and how they get it. (you have to be bigger than tv networks to create a demand for something that no one knows they want.)

3. Once you decide upon a product/service/information etc. that you know is in demand, figure out:

who your target buyer is (age, gender, situation, income, etc.)

why do they buy

where do they look to buy (including what words they use in search engines to find and buy it.)

how do they buy (cash, paypal, credit card, payments, etc.)

how you can get in front of them. (amazon kindle categories, counter tops of gas stations, ads on websites they frequent, billboards, advert insert of utilities bills, radio add, newspaper classifieds, online classifieds, joint venture with someone who sales to the same people or has a complimentary product. etc.

Don’t be stuck on “website” or “e-commerce” or any of that. the internet is just a tool, and often your most effective way to sale is on ebay or amazon or even local craft fairs and yard sales.

4. create and sell your product quickly so if you fail you fail as quick as possible and move on – don’t waste time setting up your office until you have something that you know sells.

5. Don’t quit – This doesn’t mean don’t abandon a sinking ship, rather it means fail quickly and often and learn from your mistakes.

Now I just need to go apply the above myself :D

If you think I am wrong about anything (or missing something important) please let me know in the comments below.

I found I had

lower back pain – went to chiropractor – found that my pelvis mobility is too tight and I have a bulging disc. I need to restore the mobility to my pelvis before I keep lifting. I also need to fix a twist in my pelvis. So, I have two exercises prescribed – to do twice a day, along with moist heat and no strain on my lower back.

1. Lying on back with knees bent and feet flat, squeeze ball or towel or something between knees for 8-10 seconds then rest for 10 seconds. (this opens up the pelvis). Every 3 reps, lift my left leg and hold behind knee and pull until thigh is just past 90deg and hold for 10 seconds. This helps correct the pelvic twist. Repeat for 20-30 reps.

2. get a Stability Ball and put it between my butt and the wall, leaning slightly back, feet shoulder width apart, toes slightly pointed out, knees follow toes. Squat down and up, focusing on pressing into the ball with my butt. This will actually use my legs to help open up the pelvis and increase the mobility of those joints. I didn’t ask how many reps, but I suspect 20 will be good.

Along with those, I plan to do the following spine mobility and core strengthening exercises in place of my weight workout, until I am cleared to lift again, and then do it as a warm up to my weights:

Instructions and video at http://deansomerset.com/2010/12/02/the-best-exercises-you-will-ever-do-spinal-stability-series/

And, I have been watching a great series of videos from http://www.mobilitywod.com/

There are some slight spoilers below – read my review on goodreads to avoid any spoilers

This book disturbed me – as any good book should. My youngest son who is now 11 years old, is mentally handicapped (our current politically correct term for mentally retarded) and also has some physical handicaps. I also have several neighbors who have mentally handicapped adults in their families who I am friends with.

Because of this, I was able to identify much more with the protagonist then I may have been able to otherwise.

The basics of the story are simple. Charlie Gordon is a man with an IQ of 68. He is happy and loving, and feels that he has lots of friends. He has always wanted to be smart so he could have more friends. (And we find out later in the book so that he could have the approval of his mother and family.)

So when he is offered the opportunity to receive an operation that may make him smarter, he jumps at the chance.

Algernon is the name of the rat that had the operation before Charlie.

The operation works. Charlie becomes a genius, although not right away. His mental ability skyrockets, and leave his social and emotional abilities lagging behind. He also develops total recal of memories he gathered growing up, but he sees those memories now through the mindset of a genius instead of the low IQ boy that he was. He discovers that most people who he thought were his friends were actually being mean to him. He discovers that people who used to like him no longer do because he makes them uncomfortable with both his genius intellect and his emotional and social gaffes.

Then he notices that the rat, Algernon, is regressing. He discovers that he will too – and as quickly as he became smart, he loses it.

The book is made up of his observations and thoughts at evey stage.

We get to see the way we treat mentally handicapped from their point of view. It is illuminating but sad.

As a funny aside, The same evening I finished this book, I watched Episode 2 of Season 2 of the TV series “Person of Interest” where the book “Flowers for Algernon” plays a minor role in the plot.

I would rate this book PG-13 for disturbing situations, and frank discussions about sex and relationships. Overall, I recommend everyone read it.

In the following images and instructions, learn how to register for a facebook developer’s account, and then how to make a facebook app that is your (or any) webpage in a facebook page tab.

This is meant as a bonus for Facebook Traffic Unleashed. If you don’t have a copy – go get one!

Also, please pre-enroll for my class at www.skillshare.com/Easy-e-commerce-how-to-setup-and-promote-your-own-online-store/1504132523 Free and no obligation.

Now on with the tutorial!

You can skip the ‘register developer account’ and go to ‘create an app’ if you already have a facebook developer’s account.

To register for a facebook developer account, go to developers.facebook.com (go ahead and click that link, it will open in a new window.)

If you are logged in already, there will be a button in the upper right portion that says “Register as a Developer”

If you are not logged in, click on the ‘login’ link in the upper right corner. The screen looks like this. (click for a big version in a new window.)

2013-02-14_2100-facebook-developer-1

You need to login with your existing facebook account. (or register for one if you don’t have it – this is not the developer registration yet, just your normal facebook account)
The screen looks like this. (click for a big version in a new window.)

2013-02-14_2101-facebook-developer-2-login

Now that you are logged in, you will see a green button in the upper right area of the screen labeled: “Register as a Developer”. Go ahead and click that.
(click image below to see big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-14_2102-facebook-developer-3-welcome

The first step is to agree to their terms and conditions. Click the “I accept . . .” check box and then the “Continue” button.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-14_2103-facebook-developer-4-accept-terms

Next it will require a phone number that it can send a verification text to. Enter the number and then “Continue”.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-14_2104-facebook-developer-5-verify-account

Your phone should get the text almost immediately. Enter the numbers/letters in the text in this window.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-14_2106-facebook-developer-6-verify-number

It will then prompt you for security settings for this number. You can leave the default “Friends” or choose “Me only”.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1746-facebook-developer-7

I chose “only me.”
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1746-facebook-developer-8-sharenumberonlywithme

They will ask you to fill out some survey information. You can skip this if you wish.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1749-facebook-developer-9-survey

Congratulations! You are now a facebook developer!
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1749-facebook-developer-10-your-now-a-developer

Now you can create your first page tab app!

Start by click on the big blue “+ Create New App” button.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1750-facebook-developer-11-app-dashboard

Next you will choose a name for your app. You don’t need to feel in the “namespace” or check “web hosting” because you will be putting an existing website into a facebook page tab.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1751-facebook-developer-12-create-new-app

I chose “page-in-tab” as a name. It checked that no one else had used it, and tells me it is valid.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1752-facebook-developer-13-name-app

Facebook wants to know that I am human and not a computer, so they ask me to verify that.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1753-facebook-developer-14-new-app-captcha

Now my app is created and I am in the basic settings page. I have covered up the ‘app secret’. The arrow points to the area we want to click on to make a page tab app.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1755-facebook-developer-15-basic-app-settings

I give it a name and the urls (secure url required, I will be showing you how to get a free SSL setup in a future post) and go looking for an image to upload for tab’s image on my facebook page.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1801-facebook-developer-page-tab-entries

I didn’t have a good page tab image to use, so I went to my crecon.com banner creator and made one. It is the second form down on that page. Be sure to set the width to 11 and the height to 74.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1805-crecon-page-tab

I then right-clicked on the image and chose ‘save as’ and then came back to the facebook app page and uploaded that image. This is what my app page looks like now:
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1807-facebook-developer-18-filled-out

Now we have the app’s ID. (we have the secret too, but we won’t be using it.) We will use the ID in the next step.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

2013-02-16_1808-facebook-developer-19

For this step we go to a url we have to create using the ID of the app. We also have to have a url to go after we are done adding the tab – it doesn’t really matter what this is. Copy the following url and replace the number with your own App ID.

appid: next:

https://www.facebook.com/dialog/pagetab?app_id=428051757269843&next=http://facebook.com

2013-02-16_2117-facebook-developer-add-app-to-page

Visit that URL and facebook will ask you which of your pages to add it to.

And then this is what it will look like on your facebook page. Your new tab goes into the last spot (in picture arrow is pointing where it went,) but you can click on the little gear wheel and swap it with a tab in a higher spot.
