Now on with the tutorial!
You can skip the ‘register developer account’ and go to ‘create an app’ if you already have a facebook developer’s account.
To register for a facebook developer account, go to developers.facebook.com (go ahead and click that link, it will open in a new window.)
If you are logged in already, there will be a button in the upper right portion that says “Register as a Developer”
If you are not logged in, click on the ‘login’ link in the upper right corner. The screen looks like this. (click for a big version in a new window.)

You need to login with your existing facebook account. (or register for one if you don’t have it – this is not the developer registration yet, just your normal facebook account)
The screen looks like this. (click for a big version in a new window.)

Now that you are logged in, you will see a green button in the upper right area of the screen labeled: “Register as a Developer”. Go ahead and click that.

The first step is to agree to their terms and conditions. Click the “I accept . . .” check box and then the “Continue” button.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Next it will require a phone number that it can send a verification text to. Enter the number and then “Continue”.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Your phone should get the text almost immediately. Enter the numbers/letters in the text in this window.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

It will then prompt you for security settings for this number. You can leave the default “Friends” or choose “Me only”.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

I chose “only me.”
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

They will ask you to fill out some survey information. You can skip this if you wish.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Congratulations! You are now a facebook developer!
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Now you can create your first page tab app!
Start by click on the big blue “+ Create New App” button.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Next you will choose a name for your app. You don’t need to feel in the “namespace” or check “web hosting” because you will be putting an existing website into a facebook page tab.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

I chose “page-in-tab” as a name. It checked that no one else had used it, and tells me it is valid.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Facebook wants to know that I am human and not a computer, so they ask me to verify that.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Now my app is created and I am in the basic settings page. I have covered up the ‘app secret’. The arrow points to the area we want to click on to make a page tab app.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

I give it a name and the urls (secure url required, I will be showing you how to get a free SSL setup in a future post) and go looking for an image to upload for tab’s image on my facebook page.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

I didn’t have a good page tab image to use, so I went to my crecon.com banner creator and made one. It is the second form down on that page. Be sure to set the width to 11 and the height to 74.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

I then right-clicked on the image and chose ‘save as’ and then came back to the facebook app page and uploaded that image. This is what my app page looks like now:
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

Now we have the app’s ID. (we have the secret too, but we won’t be using it.) We will use the ID in the next step.
(click image below to see a big version of screen in new window)

For this step we go to a url we have to create using the ID of the app. We also have to have a url to go after we are done adding the tab – it doesn’t really matter what this is. Copy the following url and replace the number with your own App ID.
https://www.facebook.com/dialog/pagetab?app_id=428051757269843&next=http://facebook.com

Visit that URL and facebook will ask you which of your pages to add it to.
And then this is what it will look like on your facebook page. Your new tab goes into the last spot (in picture arrow is pointing where it went,) but you can click on the little gear wheel and swap it with a tab in a higher spot.

Have fun!
